Rising Trends of Nicotine Addiction in Indian Children and Adults

It is generally accepted that the majority of adult tobacco users begin using the drug during childhood or adolescence. The age group are most likely to start using tobacco products. They are affected and attracted by the types of advertisements which are very common.  Tobacco products are made with nicotine. Nicotine, an alkalide, is a compound found in the Nicotiana tabacum plant. 

Ignoring the negative effects of tobacco use has led to a significant increase in smoking in developed countries. These days, tobacco industries are making a joint effort to advertise in developing countries like India.

The World Bank reports that 82,000 to 99,000 youth across the country start smoking cigarettes every day. It is predicted that smoking-related diseases will kill 50% of adult smokers and approximately half will continue to smoke throughout adulthood.

If the rising trends of nicotine addiction in Indian children and adults continue, almost 250 million of today’s youngsters will be killed because of this tobacco habit. 

Nicotine dependency symptoms :

Nicotine releases dopamine in the same parts of the brain as other addictive drugs at the beginning of addiction. That causes mood swings that provide the person with an instant sense of happiness.

When tobacco is inhaled, nicotine enters the brain in 20 seconds, making it just as addictive as cocaine, alcohol, and opiates.

When someone becomes addicted, they experience specific symptoms when they are in need of nicotine:

  • Smoking throughout the day at regular times.
  • The desire to smoke after waking even a short distance. 
  • Considering the morning smoke is the most essential in the entire day.
  • Feelings of craving nicotine and desires.
  • Although using tobacco produces sensations of pleasure and alertness, those who are dependent on nicotine become tolerant of the intended effects.

Risk factors:

Cutting down on or discontinuing the use of addictive substances, such as alcohol or some medications, can help you withdraw addiction. Addicts frequently experience behavioural or physical changes related to detoxification symptoms. There are many physical , psychological and emotional changes occurs in an persons life. However, the effects of discontinuing a nicotine addiction vary from individual to person.

Some symptoms are :

Constipation -You may feel constipation after you stop using nicotine. Stools are frequently dry and firm. Other signs could be bloating, pain in the abdomen, etc. 

Concentration problems –It may be challenging to focus due to all of the withdrawal symptoms related to quitting smoking.

Cough – When someone stops smoking, some people get a chronic cough.

Insomnia –  sleeplessness, causes people to have difficulty falling asleep. It may be harder to fall asleep during withdrawal symptoms, especially the first night or two after stopping.

Migraines – Withdrawal may also result in senior migraines, such as tension-type headaches or cluster headaches.

Most people begin smoking as a recreational activity, but it quickly becomes addictive. When you prevent an addict from smoking for a period, they are unable to quit. If you want to discontinue try not to stress about the next several weeks and how you’ll get through this.

There are many ways to avoid cravings, such as:-

  • Keep away from things like alcohol, caffeine and individuals you know who smoke because they may encourage your desire of smoke.
  • When a craving occurs, try taking a walk or doing a little exercise.
  • Use nicotine replacement therapy, including chewing gum, or lozenges.
  • Develop a fresh routine for the times you generally smoke. 
    Take a breath deep.
  • Say to yourself why you want to quit smoking and overcome the desire to smoke.
  • Participate in a stop-smoking program online or read the blogs of people who quit the addiction or struggling with tobacco cravings.
  • Do your best to remove cigarette odor by washing clothes.
  • People who receive support from friends and family are more successful in quitting addiction. Ask your friends or girlfriends to help you quit smoking.
  • Avoid trigger time . Trigger is something that automatically makes you want to smoke. Times like right after a meal, at your best friend’s house, while drinking coffee, or while driving your car when you usually smoke.

Health Issues due to Nicotine :

Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical substance that causes high blood pressure and several respiratory diseases. Hence, there’s a possibility that smoking has begun to damage your body from the inside and outside if you have been a smoker for a long time.

There are some health issues caused due to nicotine consumption:

  • Different study showed that nicotine stimulated the growth of non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer in a receptor-dependent way.
  • Nicotine has physiological and pathological effects on various organs.
  • When people are directly exposed to nicotine, they may experience burning and irritation in the mouth and throat, increased salivation, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • It reduces blood sugar levels during fasting. Additionally, it stimulates lipolysis, thereby reducing body weight.
  • Nicotine stimulation has physiological effects on cells that are important for cancer development and growth.

A life-threatening, very addictive substance present in nicotine. Nicotine causes the heart to beat faster and pump more oxygen when it enters the body. It also makes you feel calm and relaxed.

Addiction to nicotine starts with a craving for the drug and an inability to give it up. The compound found in tobacco that makes quitting difficult is called nicotine. Although nicotine has pleasant effects on the brain, these effects run out quickly.

Quitting nicotine raises the quality of life and improves health. Stopping up nicotine may improve life by up to ten years and lower the risk of dying early. Smoking affects those who smoke, medical facilities, society and wastes a lot of money.
